can,â she said.
âI know you may be disappointed, but it would be difficult for any of you to enter into a legal agreement because youâre not oldenough,â Juliana said, âand second of all, it would be very difficult for you to sell only a couple designs to any fashion house. At least this way you will have a connection to the industry that you can use when you get older.â
Nancy noticed that a few people still seemed unhappy.
âJuliana and I also have another surprise that weâll tell you in the morning,â Mrs. Corwin said. âYouâll never guess what it is, either!â
chaPTER THREE
The Missing Designs
âThe fashion world is coming to River Heights!â Juliana announced the next morning. âThatâs my new surprise. Iâm going to debut my âRhes!â clothing line in your school auditorium!â
There was a collective gasp from the class. Nancy could tell that even the boys were surprised.
Deirdreâs hand shot up. âJuliana! Juliana! Juliana!â
âYes?â Juliana said.
âDoes that mean that River Heights will be just like New York, Paris, and Rome during their fashion weeks?â Deirdre asked breathlessly.
Juliana nodded. âAs close as we can make it,âshe said. âThere will be national and international coverage of the event by fashion magazines and television crews!â
âModels walking the runway and all that?â Bess said.
Juliana nodded again. âAnd speaking of
that
, let me introduce the rest of my models, who just arrived this morning,â she said.
Just then a side door opened and three girls and one boy walked inside. They all wore sunglasses.
âYouâve already met Nicole, who accompanied me, and now I want you to meet Felicity, Elizabeth, Marissa, and Cory,â Juliana said.
With that, Elizabeth, Marissa, and Cory paraded in front of the class the way they would walk on the runway during the fashion show, swinging their hands back and forth.
âWhatâs wrong, Felicity?â
Juliana asked. âWhy are you just standing there?â
Felicity rolled her eyes. âI donât feel well,â she said.
Juliana sighed but didnât say anything.
After the other three models had paraded back and forth several times, they left the room. Felicity hurried to catch up.
âIâll see you in the auditorium in a few minutes!â Juliana called after them.
Bess looked at Nancy and George. âYou canactually feel the electricity in the air,â she said.
âYeah, and if you touched Felicity, youâd probably get shocked,â George said. âShe definitely doesnât want to be here.â
Juliana turned back to face the class. âAs promised, thereâs still one more surprise,â she said. âIâm planning to have some of
you
model your designs for the show.â
There was a loud shriek from some of the girls.
âModeling is a perfect job for good-looking guys like me,â Quincy said.
âDonât flatter yourself, Quincy,â Nadine said. âMy mother told me that modeling agencies hire all kinds of models, not just people who look like movie stars.â
âQuincy doesnât look like a movie star, Nadine,â Peter said. He grinned. âYou need glasses.â
âThatâs not what I meant, Peter!â Nadine said. âModeling agencies hire
real
people too.â
âWell, class, I think weâre getting off the subject,â Mrs. Corwin said. âWhat we need to do now is start planning for the big event. Itâlltake all of us working together to pull it off.â
âYou can do it,â Juliana assured them. âI need to go to the auditorium now, but Nicole has agreed to stay with you to answer any questions you might have.â She smiled at Nicole. âNicole is a natural. She doesnât need as much practice as the others.â
Nicole smiled back.
