course not,â I said. âHeâs older than us.â
âWhatâs that got to do with anything?â
âWell, I just donât think of him that way.â
âCalm down, Gilly,â Lexie said, in her quiet superior voice. âYouâre giving yourself away.â
I blushed, even though I was annoyed.
She bent over her sandwich and lifted the top slice of bread, picking chips out and eating them. âHad enough of the bread now,â she said. âGot any more chips?â Lexie never worried about manners. It didnât make her uncomfortable to have people run around after her.
âNo.â
She licked the salt off her fingers.
âNever mind.â Reaching over, she removed a lipstick from her bag. âLook at this.â She wound a coral pink colour out of the tube and applied it without a mirror. I could see grains of salt from the chips beneath the colour. âItâs a tester,â she said. âIâm allowed to have them when thenew ones come in.â She pressed her lips together and then pouted to spread the colour. âIs it even?â
âYeah.â
âWhereâs your dad then?â She sat forward and jiggled her breasts into place inside her shirt.
âHere.â Dad stepped in out of the dark hallway and I felt a prickling sensation across the back of my neck, wondering how long heâd been standing there.
âHey, Cray,â Lexie said. That was what she called him. Sheâd been stopping by for a while now, and she and my father were increasingly on familiar terms.
âHowâs my little lady?â Dad asked.
âGood. Iâm always good.â Lexie gave my dad a wink. I thought it looked awkward, as though she was trying too hard to act older than she was. I twisted in my chair and looked at my feet.
Dad didnât notice. âWhatâve you been up to then, girlie?â
âWorking,â Lexie said. âUnlike some.â She got up off the floor, sat on the sofa and crossed one bare leg over the other. Her flip-flop fell off and she wriggled her toes.
âLifeâs too short,â Dad said. âThatâs why weâve got Pete in. Paying our way.â
âYeah, I heard,â Lexie smiled.
âAnd anyway, I am working as of next week,â my dad said. âGoing to start up a little business. Make some serious cash. Will you go out with me then, Lex?â
She laughed.
âOr have you got your eye on Pete? Heâs alright, Pete. Iâll bet heâd like the look of you.â
Lexie smiled, pleased.
Dad walked through to the kitchen and I heard the fridge open. He brought his can back and sat down beside her, snapped it open.
âHere, give us a swig,â she said, snatching the can.
âYouâre under-age,â Dad replied, but he didnât take it from her. He waited until she gave it back, her lips wet with beer. He took a drink then and I noticed the transfer of coral pink from the can to his lower lip.
She smiled at it. âYouâve got my lipstick on you.â She reached to wipe it away but my dad caught her wrist.
âLeave it there,â he said, stroking her forearm with his thumb before he let go.
She slapped his hand away but I could tell she didnât mind. She hadnât come to see me. Not this time. Sheâd come to be entertained. To check out Pete. To flirt with my dad. To be flattered.
She stood up. âAnyway,â she said, âFunâs fun, but Iâve got to go.â
âYou donât want to finish this with me?â Dad said, holding up the can.
âMaybe next time,â Lexie teased. âIâm going out tonight.â
âHot date?â
âWouldnât you like to know?â She poked her foot back into the flip-flop.
Dad smiled.
âSee you later,â she said to me. âCome in and see me at work if you like.â
âOkay.â
