wouldn’t touch that snake in the grass, ever. You are my baby.”
I tipped my head back and sighed a deep breath. “I miss you here, I miss your touch and sleeping next to you. When I sleep alone in your bed, I smell your scent on the pillow and it drives me crazy that I can’t feel you next to me.” My lower lip quivered.
“This will be over soon and everything is going to work out for us. We will get our clients and soon have as much time together as we could ever dream of.”
“I hope so, baby.”
“Gotta run, I still need to go over a couple of things before Anna gets here. I’ll see you tomorrow night.”
“Okay baby. I love you,” I said.
“Love you more.”
After we ended the call, I gently placed the phone back on the desk, and pulled my knees up to my chin, wrapping both arms around my legs, procrastinating about the work at hand. I wanted to get lost in a Patrick infused daydream for just a few more minutes before getting back to work.
~*~*~
After, what seemed like the longest weekend ever, Patrick was finally about to come home from Miami. I ran around the apartment cleaning up the last of the dirty dishes in the sink and tidying up. He had just texted that he was on his way from the airport and I was beside myself with excitement. I had finished all the proposals and couldn't wait to show him my work. I was pretty proud of myself, I had stuck to our schedule, burying myself in work all weekend. I knew the minute he walked through the door though, I would jump on him and wrap my legs around his waist.
I heard the click of the door and sure enough, I bounded towards it, practically knocking him over, suitcase and all.
“Whoa, someone’s glad to see me,” he exclaimed. He gave a light laugh and catching his balance, let the momentum of my attack spin the two of us around in a circle.
“I thought you would never get here,” I said, breathing heavily from my Olympic high jump. I released him from my grip and let him finish putting his bag down and get settled, chatting non-stop about his flight.
“Are you hungry? Do you want me to make you something to eat? Or do you just want to sit and relax for a while?”
“Um no, not really hungry. Maybe in a bit.” He continued to unpack and put the items from his suitcase away. Something wasn’t right. I sensed that he was acting a little strangely. My heart twisted with a sour note. I plunked myself down on the bed and as he turned to me from putting away clothes in a drawer, I addressed him squarely with a stern face.
“Patrick, what’s going on? You are acting strange. Is there something you’re not telling me?” I waited with my heart pounding, my mouth was dry and I braced myself for the worse.
Halfway to putting his shirt in the closet, he set it aside and pursed his lips. “I may as well tell you now. I promised you that I would not keep anything from you again.” He sighed and shoved his hand through his hair as he paced the floor in front of me.
My heart was pounding even harder as I waited for what was to come.
“Chloe, I know you don’t like to hear about the Baroness but, well, once she finally made it down to Miami, she called me and said she wanted a private meeting.”
I crossed my arms across my chest and closed my eyes as I shook my head. “And I suppose she wanted that to take place in her hotel suite, just you and her?”
Patrick grimaced and peeking one eye open said, “Well, um, yes.”
“Oh God, I knew it.” I put my head down and bit my lower lip.
“But wait Chloe, I know it sounds bad but it’s not what you think. Nothing like that happened. Let me finish.”
I couldn't bear to look at him. My nails were digging into the palm of my hands in tight fists.
“She said that she wants to give me a promotion. She wants to make me CEO of the ad agency, plus pay me a bonus of a million dollars. Chloe, do you realize that I would have had to wait years for this opportunity if the company was still Meyer and
