thing happens all the time,â Maggie said.
âEven my Aunt Jessie left some money to the nursing home she was in.â
âBut this was a considerable sum, and heâs sure thereâs something fishy going on there.â He peered at the hissing percolator.
âThat coffee smells wonderful, Henny.â
âI get your special cup,â she answered, mopping her eyes. âIt needed lots of washing.â
âFrom what Midge has told me,â Maggie said, âthe patients are very well looked after and there is a long waiting list to get in. Your Mr. Slater could always contest the will.â
âThatâs what I told him,â Nat said, âbut he still wants us to look into the place.â
âWe canât just walk in and ask if theyâre bilking their patients,â Maggie said, laughing.
âNo, but he wants us to see if other ex-patients have left large amounts to them. Weâll need to know whoâs on the board of directors. Can you do that, Maggie?â
âIâll call and ask them to send me one of their brochures.â She pulled the telephone book toward her. âSilver Springs,â she murmured, running her fingers down the Ss. âAh. Here it is.â
âSilver Springs Nursing Home,â a prim voice answered after Maggie had dialed the number. âMay I help you?â
âIâm very interested in placing my elderly mother in your residence,â Maggie said. âI understand you do have long-term care?â
âYes, madam, but Iâm afraid thereâs quite a long waiting list.â
âSo I understand,â Maggie replied. âBut my mother is in the process of selling her home in Shaughnessy and needs expert care.â
Maggie could practically hear the wheels turning when the receptionist heard the prestigious address. She added, âThe house and estate are far too large for her to cope with in her present state of health.â
âThe brochure will be sent immediately, madam,â the crisp voice answered. âWe sometimes have a cancellation.â
âMother will need to know who the board of directors are, of course.â
âI will include the list with our brochure. And where shall I send it?â Maggie gave her own home address.
It was late in the afternoon when George called. âI think Iâve found that place you were looking for,â he said when Maggie picked up the phone. âItâs called The Path to the Golden Light, and itâs not a dog kennel. Itâs a farm run by a Brother Francois and his followers.â
âNo dogs?â
âNo dogs! Just the usual chickens and goats.â
âWhat do you meanâ his followers? â
âApparently itâs some kind of sect. Theyâre springing up all over the place.â
âBoth Sandra and Johannaâs boyfriend said she was going to see some kennels. Must be some other place. But thanks, anyway,â
Maggie said, then asked, âDo you know how the investigationâs going on with Johannaâs death?â
âWeâve interviewed lots of people, but so far no leads,â he answered. âYou still looking into it?â
âWe havenât heard anything more from the Evansâ so I guess theyâre leaving that end of it up to you guys.â
âThatâs what weâre here for. Give your boss my best.â
Maggie was just putting on her coat when the phone jangled again. âBlast!â She wavered. âI suppose Iâd better see who it is.â To her surprise it was Marie Evans.
âWe would like to make an appointment to see Mr. Southby as soon as possible,â she said. âDavid and I are not happy with the slowness of police.â
âBut itâs only been a couple of weeks.â
âYes. But already five weeks since Johanna was murdered.
When can we come?â
âI know that you have to catch a ferry,â
