understand." He kissed me again, his tongue slowly mating with mine. "Will you be late?"
I shook my head. "I don't think so. Maybe another hour or so."
"Be careful on the road, Meg. There are all kinds of crazy people driving this time of night. Most of them are probably drunk as shit."
I smiled at his description. "I'll be careful."
"And don't rush. Drive the speed limit."
"Okay." I tried not to laugh. I used to find his constant harping on my safety so annoying. Now I understood why he did it. He cared about me and wanted to keep me safe. That didn't mean I didn't have fun needling him about it. "I'll text you at every stop sign and intersection."
"If I find out you're texting and driving, I'll swat that sweet little ass of yours until it's red hot."
    "Promise?"
He snorted with amusement and kissed my neck. "I think I created a monster with that first spanking of yours."
    "Yep."
We kissed again but the moment was interrupted by three blasts of an air horn. I exhaled loudly. "That's my cue to head back." I glanced around and spotted different colors bouncing in the darkness. I noticed an abundance of pink. "Huh. Looks like my team is winning."
Gage lowered me to the ground and lifted my arms over his head. He fished the handcuff key from his pocket and unlocked them. "Here. Put this back on."
I took the glow-in-the-dark necklace from him and slipped it back into place. Technically I had just cheated but I didn't really care. I had just received two mind-blowing orgasms, in the dark, on a golf course, at a sorority party. Nothing could rain on that parade of awesomeness.
Gage swatted my backside. "Go on."
I smooched his cheek. "I'll see you later."
"Text me when you get back to the house. Otherwise, I'll worry."
"Gage, it's not like there's an ax murderer out here on the golf course!"
"That's what ax murderers want you to think."
I laughed and backed away from him. "You're crazy. You're hot but crazy."
"Go on," he said with a laugh. "Get back to your party."
I didn't want to leave him but did. Carefully, I made my way back to the house. I had no doubt that Gage still lingered in the woodsy spot where we had shared our illicit tryst. He would probably watch me until I got back together with my friends. I couldn't blame him for being overprotective. As a SWAT officer, he saw the worst crimes and offenses. It was natural for him to be so wary, especially everything that happened to me back in Dallas.
"Where the heck were you?" Lainey asked as we waited for the perky brunette to tally up the numbers still inside the bright orange "jail" circle. "I saw you run into the trees, but then you just, like, disappeared."
"I crouched down behind a tree and stayed really still." I didn't want to lie but I figured if I busted out the truth, she would get all wide-eyed and freak out. Most people wouldn't understand the whole my-boyfriend-grabbed-me-and-cuffed-me-and-went-down-on-me-in-the-woods thing.
"Well, it was a good strategy. You guys won."
I pulled my phone from my pocket and sent a quick text.
    Safe. No ax murderers.
    Haha. Very funny.
Smiling, I tucked my phone back into my skirt. Lainey's eyebrows arched expectantly. "What?"
She suspiciously narrowed her gaze and smiled. "Don't what me, Meg. I've only known you for a couple of months but I can already tell when you're hiding something. So—who is he?"
I wanted to tell her everything, but I didn’t want her to get weird on me when that whole technically-my-stepbrother thing was mentioned. Instead, I said, "He's very nice and sexy and sweet—but it's complicated."
    "Ooh, I love complicated!"
    I laughed. "You would."
She linked her arm in mine and walked me back to the house. "So spill it. Let me live vicariously through you."
Deciding I would hold back the family ties part of the story, I said, "Well, it all started with a pair of handcuffs…"

Almost two hours later, I finally pulled into the driveway of the house. I could see a
