agree,â Stefanos said gravely and met her gaze and held.
What was she thinking? âOf course I agree,â she said shakily. She hugged Zoe and managed a smile. âTheyâre lovely. Your cousin has been wonderfully generous.â She bit her lip. âBut youâre not my cousin, Stefanos. I canât take the laptop.â
âItâs part of a debt,â he said softly. âI owe you so much.â
âYou owe me nothing.â
âI loved Christos.â
âHe was my friend too.â
âNo,â he said, and suddenly he was almost stern. âYou donât understand. Christos was my family. That I didnât know he was deadâ¦that Zoe has been alone for so longâ¦it touches my honour. Iâm asking you to take this and it doesnât begin to repay the debt I owe you.â
It touches my honour â¦It was a quaint phrase. Old-fashioned.
He meant itâabsolutely.
âIâ¦â She took a deep breath. If they were going to talk about old-fashionedâ¦âThen itâs my honour to care for Zoe,â she said, and she tilted her chin. âZoe is not related tome by blood, but Iâm her godmother and her guardian. I wonât let that go.â
âIâm not asking you to,â he said evenly. âIâm asking for you to give Khryseis a chance. Iâm asking you to come with Zoeâas her nanny as well as her guardianâand if you do this then you will be paid. I want you to help me introduce her to her birthright.â
âAnd then come home without her?â
âNo,â Zoe said. Sheâd been examining her pile of clothes with joy, but this wasnât a child who could be bought. She looked at the clothes with longing and then pushed them away. Suddenly panicking. âI donât want them if I canât have Elsa.â
âYou can have Elsa,â Stefanos said evenly. âIâm asking you both to come.â He smiled at Elsa, ignoring her obvious panic, simply smiling at her as if he understood what she was thinking; she was being slightly foolish but he wasnât about to threaten her.
His smile lied, she thought desperately. This man was a prince, about as far from her world as it was possible to be. He was accustomed to having his charm work for him. He thought now that he simply had to smile and shower gifts and heâd get what he wanted.
âDo you know what a royal nanny earns?â he asked, and she caught her breath.
âI donât want to know.â
âNow thatâs just dumb,â he said. âKnocking back a fabulous job because you havenât heard the terms? I rang a couple of friends last night. They have nannies in Europe and they kindly rang a couple of the top agencies and asked. Whatâs the going rate for the best nanny in the world? they asked.â
And he gave her a figure.
She gasped. She stared across the table at him and he smiled back at her. âThatâs what Iâm offering,â he said softly. âStarting today.â
She could be paid for doing what she loved? Caring for Zoe?
But thisâ¦This could never be about money. Because she did what she did for Zoe for love; for nothing else.
âElsa, Zoe needs to come home anyway,â he said gently. âIâm sorry, but itâs not negotiable. Iâve also talked to people here in Social Services and to lawyers from your Family Court. I have more chance at success in gaining custody than you might think. The court would look at what Zoe stands to inherit. Theyâd look at the home Iâm prepared to give her. The consensus is that she should have the right to learn about Khryseis. Itâs her heritage.â
He turned to Zoe and spread his hands. âZoe, your father was the Crown Prince of Khryseis and youâre now the Crown Princess. If you agree, Iâd like to show you the place where your papa grew up. Iâd like to introduce you to an
