wants to take us to the Shackleton Building â Jordan â
âPeter?â Mum called through the door.
I dragged my head up from the pillow to look at the clock.
10.28 a.m.
What kind of time is that to be out of bed on a Saturday?
âIâm sleeping!â I called back through the door, closing my eyes again.
I heard the door ease open.
âYou have visitors,â said Mum.
âWha â?â
âYou â have â friends â here â to â see â you,â said Mum, speaking slowly and clearly like I was one of her ESL kids.
âOh,â I murmured, gathering the strength to sit up. âHang on, just give me a minute to ââ
The door swung open and Jordan and Luke walked in.
Jordan. Over at my house for the first time ever. And there I was, half-asleep, hair messed up.
Wearing freaking lightsaber pyjamas.
Awesome. Thanks, Mum.
Fortunately, Jordan looked almost as awkward as I did.
âHey,â I said, sitting up.
âHey â¦â she said hesitantly, stepping towards me. âWe came â I came to apologise for yesterday.â
âWhereâs my dad?â I mumbled.
âOut, I think,â said Luke, closing the bedroom door behind him.
âOkay,â I said, trying to smooth down my hair. âGood.â
âI was out of line, ripping into you like that,â Jordan went on. â Whatever your dadâs story is, youâre in this as much as we are. I was just â I guess I was still wound up about the phone not working, and ââ
âDonât worry about it,â I said. As if I was ever not going to accept her apology. âI â you werenât the only one who overreacted.â
I got up and moved towards her, pretty sure this was a hug moment.
Jordan turned away and went to pull open my blinds.
Okay, maybe not.
Probably just not a hug person.
I sat back down on the edge of my bed, just watching her for a minute. She was wearing her T-shirt with the green hearts â the same one sheâd had on the day she arrived in Phoenix.
âI found out some more stuff about the phones,â I said, breaking the silence again.
That got a reaction.
âSettle down, itâs nothing good,â I said. âTurns out they canât call any outside numbers. Theyâre running on a short-range network that Co-operative people set up to call each other inside the town.â
âHow do you know that?â said Luke, clearly not wanting to believe me.
âBecause â¦â I trailed off at the look on Jordanâs face. âOkay, first you have to promise not to kill me.â
Jordanâs expression didnât change.
âJust hurry up and tell us,â said Luke.
âOkay, fine,â I said. âYesterday afternoon, I used Pryorâs phone to call my dad.â
Fire blazed up behind Jordanâs eyes, and I could tell that she badly wanted to blow up at me again.
âYeah, I know, I know, it was stupid,â I said hurriedly. âBut itâs all right. I didnât let him see our phone and I hung up on him as soon as he answered. He doesnât know it was me that called.â
Jordanâs shoulders relaxed, but only a bit.
âHereâs the other thing, though: he wants to take us to the Shackleton Building tomorrow.â
The shoulders arched right back up again. âWhat for?â she asked. âYour dad doesnât even know us.â
I hesitated, really not keen to admit that Iâd been the one who brought it up.
âCalvin or Pryor or someone probably put him up to it,â said Luke.
âRight,â I said, latching onto Lukeâs explanation.
âItâs a trap,â said Jordan immediately.
My chest heaved.
No. Even if Dad was working with Shackleton, he would never go that far. He wouldnât turn me over to them.
âWeâre already trapped,â said Luke. âThey can grab us
