tray in his right hand walked up to me.
“Hors d’ouvers, Ma’am?” he asked politely, lowering his gaze and averting his eyes.
“No. No, thank you.” I said.
He nodded politely and walked away.
“You should try them. They’re very good,” I heard a voice say to my right.
Turning only my head, I eyed a tall, dark-haired man leaning against the bar, eyeing me carefully. His green eyes sparkled as he smiled my way and his sleek, black hair caught the shimmer of the neon lights.
“I’m sure they are. I’m just… not hungry. I had dinner with friends earlier.”
“The gorgeous pair out there on the dance floor?” he asked.
“Yes, yes…” I said. This man… something about him… “I’m sorry, did we meet last week?”
“No. I wasn’t here last week. Did you have a good time?”
“I did. Very much so. It was my first time. It was - - “
“Exhilarating,” he said with a grin, his perfect teeth sparkling.
I froze, feeling my fingers begin to loosen their grip on my drink. Catching my unease, he lunged for me, placing his fingers beneath mine and clasping the glass in his hand. Grabbing me by the waist, he steadied me, his chin pressing against my forehead.
I looked up into his eyes, my mouth parted in breathless excitement. “Tobias?” I asked.
The left corner of his lips turned up into a smile and he nodded slowly, turning to place my drink on the bar and run the finger of his free hand over my cheek.
“Hello, Alexandra,” he said, his voice ringing clear and familiar within me now.
“What.. what- -?”
“Am I doing here? Why is it you’re so full of wonderful words on the phone, but here, I seem to be able to finish them for you?” he asked, voice snarky.
“Happens. When you take a woman by surprise,” I said breathily, my voice lost within me as his body pressed against mine.
“Well, then we’d better get used to it, hadn’t we? Because I’m full of surprises.”
My breath re-entered my body as I inhaled deeply, tasting his cool, amber wood fragrance.
“That you are, Doctor. That you are. How did you know it was me?” I asked
He cocked his head to his shoulder and smiled. “I told you, I know the owners. All one must do when they want to find their future is know the right people.”

My palms were clammy. Relax, Alex, I thought to myself. Reaching for my drink, I sipped slowly, keeping my eyes above the rim and locked on Tobias’ face. I glanced around room. I’d flagged Lark and Sirella down on the dance floor, pointing at Tobias and alerting to them to my new escort, mouthing an undetectable, “Him.” They understood, nodding impressively as their bodies swayed seductively on the dance floor.
Tobias and I had made our way to the seating area, sitting close on a long, white cushioned bench toward the back of the room. He watched me closely, his eyes on me, searching my face.
I was surprised by his attractiveness. A lean face, impeccably clean shaven, with intensely smoldering green eyes and large, golden irises that burned with intensity beneath the light, he caught attention, the women in the room’s glances lingering longer than normal. His thick, black brows betrayed his thoughts, lifting and furrowing as his face changed moment-to-moment. I wanted to be in his head. I wanted to know every single thought in this seductive man’s mind.
I looked across the table as I leaned toward the small table in front of us and set my cocktail glass down gently. Tobias had gotten a brandy from the bar. Slowly, he sipped, licking the liqueur from his lips with every one.
Leaning forward, he set his glass close to mine. Still in awe, I turned to stare at the glasses, noting the similarities between us. My Midori, green and sweet sat in a tall, slim, elegant cocktail glass beside his dark, smoky brandy, strong and smooth with a smoky aroma reminiscent of his cologne.
“I… I don’t know what to say,” I said.
“What do you want to say? We’ve said so much
