question deep in your heartsâwhat were you made to do?â She looked out over the crowd. âDo you have a passion for writing music for God? Do you hear melodies and lyrics in your sleep? If you know exactly what Iâm talking about, we want to encourage you. If this is what youâre made to do, go for it! Donât give up. Before time began, God prepared good works for you to do, and if youâre here, yours likely involve music. Believe that God will accomplish that good work through you.â
Kelli felt a shiverâand not because Stephanie had elbowed her in the ribs. She had that feeling again, like she was on the edge of something.
âOne final comment before I introduce Roger,â Rita said. âWe keep the conference small because we want to hear your heart and give you special time and attention for the two and a half days weâre together. You show up eager to share thoughts and ideasâand of course, your musicâand weâre able and eager to oblige you. Butââ she gave a grinââweâre not as small as we used to be, so thereâs one important guideline to keep in mind.â
Kelli sat at full attention.
âI know itâs tempting to stop one of our faculty or featured artists and ask him or her to listen to your songs, but time doesnât allow them to accommodate everyone, and it easily becomes overwhelming. Weâre asking you not to do that.â
Stephanie was frowning.
âThankfully, thereâs no need,â Rita said. âWeâve got the Songwriters Showcase tonight and tomorrow night, which youâve already signed up forââ
âWhat showcase?â Stephanie whispered, eyeing them both. âI didnât see where Kelli could sign up for that.â
ââand weâve got the ever-popular individual critiques.â Rita lifted a white card in her hand. âIf you submitted song demos for review, you should have received in your registration packet a note card with an appointment time. Thatâs when you will receive a professional critique of the songs you submitted.â She moved away from the podium. âSome of you have asked if itâs too late to submit now. Iâm afraid so. The deadline was one month ago, to give our team time to listen to and evaluate the songs.â
âI canât believe this,â Stephanie mumbled. She ducked her head past Kelli and hit Cyd on the arm. âCan you believe this? We missed out on all the good stuff. Kelliâs songs canât be evaluated.â
Kelli stared ahead. Much as she hated to admit it, a touch of excitement had eased into her heart about this weekend. But she shouldâve known better. This was their answer, their confirmation that the door was shut where her music was concerned. She couldnât have submitted songs even if theyâd allowed late submissions. She didnât have a demo.
âWell, as I said,â Kelli offered, âIâm glad we get to spend time with each other this weekend.â
Cyd patted her leg. âAnd youâll still learn lots. You never know when you might be moved to delve into music again.â
âThere yâall go again,â Stephanie said. âLow expectations.â
Cyd made a face. âYouâre the one who said we missed out on all the good stuff.â
âI was making an observation, not camping there. While you two were calling it a day, I was sending up a prayer for God to move this mountain.â
Cyd raised a wary eyebrow. âWhen did you become Ms. Mighty Woman of God?â
âH EY , L OGAN .â S TEPHANIE HAD A TEASING LILT IN HER voice as she called across the table. âMonicaâs performing in a few. You gonna dance? Thatâd be a real treat for the ladies.â
Logan gave a smile that was calculating. âRemember, Stephanie. Once this weekend is over, Iâll be seeing you week after week at church.
