heart raced against her chest. Surely Luciano wasnât suggesting they were going with her presentation? She wanted to believe it could happen. Having been disappointed so many times, she couldnât let herself believe she was about to be awarded the biggest account of her career.
âThanks, Luc.â Jeffrey stood, pulled his glasses off and walked the short distance to her dadâs desk. He hitched up his trousers to sit on the corner of the desk. âWell, Derek, Gretaâs campaign is the one weâve chosen to go with. Her concepts are not only fresh and exciting, but theyâre innovative as well. The ideas she came up with for the opening event will not only spotlight the collection, but also Regent Hotels for the Morelli Corporation. Greta represented your agency with extreme professionalism. You should be proud of her.â
So this was what it felt like to have someone believe in you. Someone who didnât doubt she couldnât do her job. Someone who saw her for who she was.
Jeff walked toward where she stood. He stopped in front of her. Her breath caught in her throat at the admiration in his eyes. âCongratulations, AngâGreta.â
âThank you,â she whispered.
âThank you for giving the Adamas Agency the opportunity to handle your account.â Derek pulled out the typical acceptance line. âIâm sure both Greta and Graham will do a fabulous job for you.â
Really? Her father was still pushing Graham onto the account?
Luciano stood and looked directly at her father. âI think youâre under a misconception here, Derek. Graham wonât have anything to do with this account. The Morelli Corporation and Jeffrey Courteux will work exclusively with Greta. Itâs her ideas we liked. Itâs her weâre going to work with. No one else.â Luciano paused and looked between her father and Graham. âAnd if I find that someone else has been forced upon Greta, we will terminate the contract.â
Sheâd never seen her father speechless, until this moment. He wanted the account too much to go against someone as powerful and influential as Luciano Morelli. But the thought of giving his daughter total control of an account probably grated. The time had come for him to trust her, and if he couldnât do this for her then the time had come to step away from working with her father.
âAm I clear, Derek?â Luciano asked again, when her father failed to respond.
âYes, thatâs fine. Not an issue at all. Iâll look forward to receiving the contracts.â
Luciano nodded and headed toward the door, pausing briefly in front of her. âHeather will be in touch and welcome aboard, Greta.â
He held out his hand and she took it, giving it a firm shake. âThank you, Mr Morelli.â
âItâs Luciano and,â he paused, a small smile playing across his lips, like he knew a secret she didnât. âI believe Iâm going to be seeing quite a lot of you.â
Luciano opened the door and walked out.
Before she had a chance to process what Luciano had meant by his parting words, Jeffrey placed a hand on her back; heat throbbed through the layers of her clothing, spreading out like a ripple on a still lake. She looked up at him, waiting for his next move.
He gave her a wink. âLater.â
She nodded. Later couldnât come quick enough for her.
Chapter 9
Jeffrey sat at the Palazzo Regent bar, waiting for Greta to arrive. The annoyance heâd felt toward her father had subsided. The way Derek had so easily dismissed Gretaâs abilities shocked him. For a fleeting moment he had been tempted to tell Derek heâd changed his mind. But heâd seen the look of utter despair on Gretaâs face. He knew then he couldnât hurt her. It didnât stop him wanting to find out why her father seemed to have such little faith in her abilities.
