cigarette out of my pack and put it between my lips.
I was waiting for her to tell me I couldnât smoke. She didnât say anything. I guess she knew I wasnât going to light it.
âSo what do you want, Pip?â
âNothinâ.â
âMaybe you just donât know what you want.â
âMaybe you just donât listen. I told you I want to get out of here.â
âAre you committed to the counseling or not?â
âI have no choice.â
âYou have nothing but choices.â
What I really wanted was a joint. If she let me light up right there, I could have stayed without giving too much of a crap. The whole thing was making my head spin.
âSo letâs talk about the drug part.â
How did she know what I was thinking?
âMr. Giraldi said he thinks you have a pretty hefty habitâthat thatâs why you sleep in class and get into the trouble that you do.â
âMaybe you should just talk to him. Sounds like you think he knows everything.â
âWell, youâre not giving up much here. You tell me. How big is your habit?â
âI donât do drugs. Iâm a health nut.â
âRight, and herbs are an integral part of your diet.â She swiveled in the chair a few times. âIf you can get honest from the beginning, we wonât have to waste a lot of time. We can get right to helping you out.â
âYou think Iâm lying?â I took the butt out of my mouth.
âI can tell youâre stoned right now.â She said this with a straight face. âYour pupils are so dilated, I could throw a Frisbee through one eye and watch it fly out the other.â
I pulled my lips into my mouth, trying real hard not to smile.
âYou smell like a giant burning stick of reefer.â
âHow do you know what reefer smells like?â I asked her.
âAha,â she said with her eyebrows going up.
ââAhaâ what?â
âThatâs a trick question.â
âYou ever smoke weed or not?â
âIf I tell you I have, youâll point to me and say, See? I can do it too. You turned out fine. If I say I never smoked it, youâll tell me I donât understand you.â
I put my cigarette back in the pack. âI donât really care anyway,â I said.
âGood. Iâd rather talk about you. Ever try to go a day without it?â
âWithout what?â
âCome on, Pip. I can smell the pot. Hell, the birds outside who got a whiff of you are still enjoying their buzz.â
âIs my time up?â
âAlmost. But if youâre going along with counseling, you need to be back tomorrow at four oâclock for group.â
âWhoâs in this group?â
âFour guys, fifteen to seventeen years old.â
âNo girls?â
âI have a separate group for the girls. I donât need you all distracting each other.â
âWhat do you do in group?â
âTalkâmostly about what theyâre trying to change and whatâs hard about doing it.â
âSo what do they want?â
âYouâll have to ask them. â She opened a desk drawer and pulled out a Dixie cup. âHow about a urine sample?â she asked, handing me the cup.
âNo, thanks. I just had a soda.â
âThe bathroom is right next door.â
âWhy do I have to do this?â
âAnyone receiving counseling here is subject to periodic drug testing. It helps us obtain information that would otherwise be avoided or lied about.â
âWhat?â
âIf you donât pee in the cup, you canât come here.â
I opened her office door and started to walk to the bathroom.
âYou should get a clock in your office,â I told her. âSo a guy knows how much time he has left to get tortured.â
âYou could wear a watch,â she said.
Bitch.
I want to land my playing piece back on Go.
