game.â
âYou play chess?â he askedâit sounded more like an accusation than a question.
âI know how to play,â I said, âalthough I really donât play.â I needed to change the subject. âYou gonna come over? We have to figure out a name for our team.â
âIs Losers taken?â he asked.
âWe could winâ¦if you were with us.â
He didnât say anything. This was better.
âWe have to pick a captain,â I said. âI canât vote for you if youâre not going to play.â
âYou were going to vote for me?â he asked. He sounded genuinely surprised, but then again, I was surprised Iâd said it too.
âWhy wouldnât I?â
He looked like he was going to answer with what we both knew to be true, but he didnât.
âWell?â I asked as I offered my hand. He took my hand, and I pulled him to his feet.
Now that Iâd convinced him to join the team I had to convince the rest of the team to join him.
Chapter Nine
âWe picked a captain yet?â I asked as we joined our team.
âNot yet,â one of the guys said.
âHow about if Jamal is our captain?â I asked.
âWhat?â Kia asked. There was no disguising the shock in her voice or in her expression.
âJamal. I think he should be our captain. Heâs got my vote. How about yours?â
Kiaâs mouth dropped open. I knew she wanted to say something, but it was like her brain had frozen. It was rare to see her at a loss for words.
âHeâs a good player, and he wouldnât mind arguing with the ref if he disagrees with the call.â Kia couldnât disagree with that because I thinkwe all knew Jamal didnât mind arguing with anybody.
âAnd he knows the rules,â I continued, trying to think of other possible reasons.
âHe does?â Kia asked.
âA whole lot better than you do,â he snapped.
Kia scoffed. What he didnât knowâand I didâ was that she knew the rules inside and out.
âHow about a little contest, me against you?â Jamal said.
âWhat sort of contest?â she asked.
âWe ask each other questions about the rules. Winner gets to be the captain. Loser gets to shut up.â
âWorks for me,â Kia said. âHow about everybody else?â
People nodded their heads in agreement. I wasnât so sure Jamal knew what he was getting himself into. Kia would be pretty hard to beat, and I didnât think Jamal would take to being beaten by a girl, especially in front of everybody.
âNick, what do you think?â
âIf everybody else agrees, I guess I agree too.â Like I had a choice.
Kia reached out and she and Jamal shook hands.
âWho goes first?â she asked.
âIâll ask you the first question. Iâll try not to make it too difficult for you.â Jamal cleared his throat. âHow much time is there in the twenty-four second clock?â
âWhat?â Kia asked.
âYou heard the question, so do you know the answer or not?â
Kia gave a scowl that even Jamal could have admired. âTwenty-four seconds.â
âDidnât want to start you off with anything too hard since youâre a girl,â Jamal said.
âIâll try and return the favor, you know, not asking you too hard a question because youâre stupid. Now your question. If there is an illegal defense, how much time is reset on the twenty-four second clock?â
âTwenty-four. And with each successive illegal defense after the first, the clock is reset and the team is awarded one free throw and possession,â Jamal said. âRight?â
âYeahâ¦but who doesnât know that?â Kia asked.
âMy turn again. How big is the backboard?â Jamal asked.
âSix feet by three and a half feet,â Kia saidwithout hesitating. âMy turn. You know the restricted half circle under
