never saw coming.
    “ You!”
“ Me?” I said pointing to myself looking around at the two beautiful blondes towering over me.
“ Yes you, what's your name?”
Of course he did n't know my name. Only been here four years, “Eve sir. Eve Mallory.”
He nodded as if considering something, “Of course it is. Mallory you have just the look I'm going for. Want your big break kid?”
My big break? As if writing human interest pieces wasn't what I went to college for... “Ummm I guess.”
“ You want it or not?”
I could feel all the eyes of the entire conference room, probably forty people or more, staring at me. “Yes sir,” I said with confidence.
“ Good. I have this idea, with Valentine's Day quickly approaching we need to hop on this 50 Shades of Grey idea. I want you to get into that Red place.”
People began to whisper around me nervously, and a guy who I'd never seen before spit his coffee out on the conference table. There was no way this was happening.
“ Excuse me sir... But you don't mean that sex club downtown, do you?” He had to be joking.
He laughed resting his hands on his oversized stomach. Thank God he was kidding.
“ That's the one. I think they're called swingers’ clubs now. You should see your face, I guess I need to choose someone else.”
And just like that I was going to let another opportunity slip through my clutches. Like hell.
He started looking around the room surveying other young writers. I took a deep breath before delivering my acceptance. “Excuse me, sir? Actually I would like the piece.”
“ Oh you would, would you? Interesting. Well since I offered it to you first, it's yours. Now go figure out how to get in while I man the rest of this boring meeting.”
I held my head high with confidence as I strut out of the room not acknowledging that every eye was on me.
As soon as I closed the door behind me I turned and ran right into Max , one of the premier social life editors. Max was that perfectly metrosexual type of guy, with a light pink shirt on and gray tie, he looked fashionable like always. And although I appreciated his good wardrobe I'd always imagined what could be underneath. He had a bit of a stocky build with muscular arms and thick chest. But what I liked most about him was his dark green eyes that stood out beautifully from his darkly tanned skin. I was feeling like jelly from my overexertion of confidence in the meeting and I dropped my notebook and iPhone on the floor.
“ Oh I'm sorry,” he said bending down to retrieve my items.
I push ed my glasses up onto my nose, “Totally not your fault. I was just…” Do I tell him that I was just given a job to write about the hottest sex club in town? No way! He would know that the only reason I took it because I hadn't been published in ages. Which would make me appear totally useless.
As he passed back my notebook and phone he said, “You were just... what?” He looked behind me. “Did you get a new assignment? I saw that the big guy’s in there today. Obviously I avoided it like the plague.”
I smiled, “Smart man. Unfortunately I’m glutton for punishment and go in every time he's here. But yeah I actually did get something this time.”
“ Oh?” His eyebrows raised further about his eyes, “Anything good?”
“ Uhhh, not really. But it’s something that will pay the bills.” Why was I telling him this much about me? Shut up now.
He nodded, “Yeah that's good. Well I have a lunch appointment with the new casting director of Rent. See you around Eve.”
I was taken aback that he knew my name. I stood in shock for a moment before ra ising a hand to his already turned back, “Yeah, see ya.”
I turned on my heel and walked in the opposite direction. I was writing about a sex club and he was meeting with the casting director from Rent. What had my life come to? What type of writer was I becoming? And what the hell was I going to wear to this thing?
