handle the business? Here I thought we both just focused on the things we did best, but maybe I was wrong. Maybe my need to control everything meant Iâd hurt my best friendâs feelings somewhere along the way.
I felt like an ass.
âIt cannot be thus,â Rand said, interrupting my thoughts.
âHmm?â Both Gemma and I looked over at the vampire in surprise.
âThe fair Lindsey has promised to be my blood vassal. She has sworn it with a kiss to her liege.â
Gemmaâs eyes went big as saucers. âDid she, now.â
I wanted to kick that smug look off Randâs face. âYeah, for some reason, he thinks Iâm lying when I say the world is round.â
âI see,â Gemma murmured. âSo while Iâve been sleeping, weâve acquired a medieval vampire and you already made out with him.â
âHe started it.â
âOh, Iâm sorry, I mustâve misunderstood.â Gemma patted my arm. âSo you have to suck face to survive? Is that it?â
I glared at her.
âAre you two sisters?â Rand asked. His gaze went back and forth, studying us as we argued on the bed.
âWe grew up in the same state home,â I told him. âNeither of us has family.â
âSo weâre each otherâs,â Gemma said. âNow donât change the subject. I want to know more about this kiss of fealty.â She gave a little shiver. âWas it sexy?â
I just kept glaring at her. âI am not answering that.â
âIs his mouth cold?â
âGemma! Letâs stay on track, please? I donât want to talk about that. Letâs talk about what weâre going to do with him.â
âIâm right here,â Rand said. âI can speak for myself.â
Gemma wiggled her eyebrows. âI told you Iâd take him.â
âLindsey is my blood vassal,â Rand repeated. âIt is she who has given her word that she will remain at my side.â He moved toward me and put a hand on my shoulder possessively. âI want her and no other.â
âOooo,â Gemma said. She made kissy noises. âThis is intriguing.â
âShe simply tastes better than most. It is something in her blood. Like a fine wine. Do you still have wine in this time?â
âOh yeah,â Gemma purred. âSo Lindsey here is like a nice merlot? Is that what youâre telling me? I wonder if it is because of something in particular? What about my blood?â
He leaned in and sniffed Gemma, then shook his head. âSour. Metallic.â
âWow, really? Iâd almost be hurt if I wasnât so fascinated by the fact that Miss Lindsey here is the tastiest thing on the block.â
âHer blood is . . . very fine.â
I ignored the heated look he was sending my way. He was driving me crazy as it was. âIâm sure Gemma tastes just dandy,â I said out of loyalty to my friend.
âNot like you,â Rand said. âYour blood perfumes the very air. Iâve never tasted anything like it.â
Gemmaâs eyes widened, and she reached over and tapped my ID bracelet. âI bet itâs this.â
âShhh,â I told her. Let him just think I was tasty. If he found out I was rare, I suspected Iâd never get free. âAnyhowâRandâs my burden. Iâll take him to his vampire friend. It shouldnât take too long, really. He says he can sense where the guy is, and then I can get back to work.â I shrugged. âYouâll just have to keep packing without me.â
Gemmaâs hands clasped together. âReally? You trust me to do that?â
Jeez, I wasnât that controlling, was I? âOf course I do.â
Her eyes lit up with happiness. âThis is so awesome! And you said Venice would suck.â
âSuck?â Rand asked, honing in on the word.
I held up a hand. âDonât ask. Just donât ask.â
