sister.
âRose, itâs me. Got a minute?â
âI always have time for my baby brother. Whatâs up?â It was good to hear her voice.
âIâve met someone amazing, but sheâs different, and I donât know how to let her know how I feel without pushing her away.â
âThatâs great! I mean that you met someone, not the other thing.â
Ryan laughed.
âHow is she different?â
He pulled his SUV into the garage and lifted the cage with Lucky sound asleep inside. âSheâs been through a terrible tragedy, and she doesnât know that I know about it.â
âJust be your sweet self, and sheâll see how you feel.â
âIâve tried that.â Ryan sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. âI really like her, sis. A lot.â
âIâd say so since this is the first time youâve ever asked me for advice about a woman.â
âSheâs everything Iâve been looking for my whole life.â He closed his eyes and pictured Maisieâs face the first time he had gotten a smile out of her. âYou know I havenât even kissed her yet?â
âReally? Iâm proud of you. All your life youâve gone for the girls that throw themselves at you. My little brother has finally grown up.â
âHa ha. Donât get me wrong, Maisie is a knockout. She just doesnât know it. And she has a pure heart.â
âMomma and Daddy told me about your visit. I think they like her as much as you do. Canât wait to meet the woman that finally caught my brotherâs heart.â
He sighed. âShould I tell her how Iâm feeling? She tends to push me away if I get too close.â
âActions first â the words can come later. Who knows, maybe she feels the same way.â
âThanks, sis.â Ryan disconnected. He got out the critter food and fed Rex and his temporary visitor. He hoped his sister was right. If Maisie didnât feel the same way about him â well, he couldnât even think about it.

Ryan opened the door to his longtime friend. Jacob, who stood about six inches taller than him, reached out to shake his hand, and Ryan pulled him in for a manly hug.
âGood to see you, man.â
Ryan nodded. âGlad you made it. Come on in.â
Jacob looked around as he walked inside. âNice place.â
âThanks. Iâm just renting this place. It was the best I could find on short notice, but I do plan on looking for a home to buy next year.â
Ryan walked his buddy around his place. When they got to the kitchen, Ryan opened the refrigerator. âSoda?â
âSure,â Jacob said, taking the can from him.
They went back into the living room and sat down.
âSo how many more pets are you planning on getting?â Jacob chuckled as he glanced at the rabbit cage.
Ryan smiled. âRex, the rat, is mine. Iâm holding onto Lucky for a friend.â
âBusiness is good?â
Ryan set his can down on the table. âGreat. There is a big need for my services in this town.â
Jacob took a long swig of his drink. âIâm happy for you, man. I do miss watching games with you, though.â
âI know. But, hey, the drive wasnât too bad, right?â
He shook his head. âNot bad at all.â
Ryan knew his friend needed to talk about more than the small stuff or he wouldnât be here in his house. âSo whatâs up? Any dating?â
âNah.â Jacob crushed the empty can. âI canât really see getting involved with anyone else.â
Something was definitely on his friendâs mind. âYouâre young. Youâre single.â
âI know. I still canât wrap my head around her cheating on me.â He paused. âShe wants me back.â
Ryanâs eyes widened. âWants you back?â
Jacob nodded his head. âShe said it was a
