eyes to Rebecca he instructed, “Say hello to Miss Summers, Rebecca.”
Rebecca couldn’t remember ever being so embarrassed.  She wanted to turn and run but Patrick now had her hand in his.  She looked up and realized the woman was beautiful.  Her clothing was of the latest fashion and Rebecca felt suddenly aware that she was still standing in her servant clothing, her hair coming out of her braid and her face most likely dirty from the kitchen, her eyes swollen from her tears.
She flushed when she saw the woman bend down and say, “Oh Patrick, she is precious.  Such a tiny little thing.  I can see why you finally married.  Though I must admit there will be several little ones disappointed that you won’t be their new papa.”
Rebecca’s mouth dropped open.  “Papa?  He’s not my papa…he’s…he’s my husband!”
The woman laughed and Patrick joined in.
Rebecca felt anger rise up in her and she stamped her foot.  The woman laughed again and Rebecca realized she was acting exactly like a snotty little girl.  She drew herself up to her full height which didn’t even reach five feet and said, “Excuse me.  I didn’t mean to be rude.  Hello, my name is Mrs. Rebecca McGavin and I’m pleased to make your acquaintance.”
Eleanor Summers smiled hugely and grinned over at Patrick.  “As I said, absolutely precious.  Shall we go inside?”
Rebecca wanted to slap the smile off the woman’s face but with her hand still being tightly held by her husband, she found herself being led into the house.  She didn’t want to be impressed but she was.  The foyer was immense and lovely.  Rebecca remembered her old home and a yearning for her old life returned.  Being an adult wasn’t working out the way she expected.
The woman led them into a side room where Patrick sat down in a large chair and unceremoniously drew Rebecca down onto his lap.  She tried to jump up, but his arms tightened around her waist.  “Settle down, young lady, unless you want to find yourself across my knees turned the other way.”
She got his meaning as well as his threat and froze.  Had he actually just threatened to spank her again?  She couldn’t think straight, couldn’t speak.  She heard the woman laugh again.
“Seems you have married yourself a little hellion, Patrick.  Are you sure you made the right choice?  As I said, there are going to be several trained little ones very disappointed.”
Patrick grinned and sat back, forcing Rebecca to lean back against his chest.  “I’m positive Eleanor.  I’ve never been happier or more excited in my life.  Rebecca and I wed today and though it’s her birthday today, I feel that I have been given a present as well.”
“Happy birthday, Rebecca.  You received the best birthday present in the world.  How many other little girls are lucky enough to find their new Papa on their birthdays?”
Rebecca simply stared at the woman.  Was she serious?  She hadn’t found a father, she’d simply basically been forced to wed this strange man and she was seriously beginning to regret leaving the school.  Everything that had happened since her ‘marriage’ had been strange and confusing.
Eleanor just grinned and turned her attention to Patrick.  “I am so glad you found her.  Was it as difficult as you thought?”
Patrick knew she wasn’t speaking of actually locating the girl, but of the conditions in which he had discovered her.  He shook his head and said, “We’ll discuss that later Eleanor.  For now, I need some help.  Although I’ve been preparing for my wife for quite a while, I find I’m in the need of several items.  I was hoping you might be able to help me.  Would you have time tonight or should I come back in the morning?  I will also be forced to leave town for a few days in the near future and would like to discuss possibilities with you for her care.  Until then, though I’ve prepared her room, I need to
