be preppy. Every day he always wore the same thing: khaki pants, burgundy penny loafers, a white (or blue) Oxford shirt, and either a pullover sweater or a vest. He was tall and lanky, his skin was the color of mocha, and his brown hair was short and spiky.
âHave you been crying?â Dexter asked, pulling his book bag over his head.
âIs it that obvious?â Eden asked in a panic, reaching into her shoulder bag for her compact and checking her face. Sheâd popped into the girlsâ bathroom between classes. Her eyes had been a little swollen during first period but she thought they had gone back to normal the last time she had checked.
âNo,â he said, taking the seat across from her and pulling out his SAT study guide. âBut your eyes are sad. Did something happen?â
âMy boyfriend broke up with me.â Eden sniffed. âI might as well tell you how he broke up with me since Iâm sure the entire school is going to know by the end of today. He sent me a text message.â
âThatâs cold.â
âI know.â Eden could feel the tears coming back, but she fought them off. She was not going to cry in front of Mindy Yee! She could see her at her table, craning her neck like a vulture, trying to figure out what was going on between her and Dexter. âAnd now his new girlfriend is making sure everyone knows what he did.â
âWell, just ignore it. Youâve got more important stuff to worry about.â
âLike what?â
Dexter held up his SAT study guide. âLike this.â
Dexter turned to the vocabulary section and began reading off a list. But every word he quizzed Eden on, she got wrong. After ten minutes, he closed the study guide.
âYouâre not concentrating.â
âIâm sorry, but I canât,â Eden wailed. âI keep thinking about Keith and Miss Braids.â
âMiss Braids?â
âDeena!â Eden spat out. âHis new girlfriend.â A thought suddenly occurred to Eden. âI bet it was her idea to have Keith text me! Oooh, she better hide the next time she sees me because Iâm going to yank every single one of those braids out of her head!â
âWhy are you letting them get to you this way?â Dexter asked. âOkay, Keith dumped you. And maybe his new girlfriend helped him. Theyâre nasty and they deserve each other. You deserve better.â
âI do?â
âYes, you do. But you canât sit around feeling sorry for yourself.â
Dexter began packing up his bag.
âWhere are you going?â Eden asked.
âWeâre not going to get anything done this morning,â he said, pulling his book bag back over his head. âWhy donât we meet after school and try again? Maybe by then youâll have gotten this out of your system.â
âOut of my system?â Eden snapped in disbelief. She couldnât believe what she was hearing! âHave you ever been in love?â
Dexter shook his head. âNo, I havenât.â
Eden pointed a finger at Dexterâs chest. âUntil you do, donât tell me what I should and shouldnât be feeling. Itâs not easy getting over a broken heart!â
Then Eden gathered her books and stormed out of the library.
âWe need to go to the mall after school,â Claudia announced as she sat across from Natalie and Eden in the cafeteria.
âWe do?â Natalie asked. âWhy?â
âShopping! Not only do I want to buy a new outfit for my party on Saturday night, but I want to find a dress for the Valentineâs Day dance. Weâve only got a week to shop and if we donât find anything at the mall, then I want to go into Manhattan this weekend.â
Natalie popped a straw into her can of Diet Pepsi. âAny idea what kind of dress you want?â
Claudia shook her head. âI just want it to be pink.â
Natalie vaguely recalled Claudia saying
