me off guard and turned my stomach at the same time. Her bleached-blond hair and heavy makeup made her look more like a Halloween character than a woman, and I wanted to throw up. Not only that, her heavy perfume was choking me. She ran her hands up my chest and hooked them around my neck.
I deftly unhooked her fingers and pushed her away. “I don’t think so, sweetheart. Not tonight.” I was trying to let her down easy, but I could tell she wasn’t going to take no for an answer.
“Oh, c’mon, baby. I could do a little something to relax you,” she cooed in a baby voice. Why the hell women thought that turned men on, I had no idea. She licked her sticky, gloss covered lips and batted her false lashes while drawing imaginary circles on my chest with her pointer finger.
“Nope. Not interested.” I never even looked down at her, hoping she would take the hint. The next thing I know, she’s grabbing my crotch and rubbing her hand up and down.
“Enough!” I practically picked her up and sat her away from me. She looked at me with hurt eyes, but I knew better. She was angry that she wasn’t going to be getting any money out of my wallet.
“Fine! Your loss, asshole.” She turned on her stripper heels and stomped away. I smirked and shook my head. Yep, that’s what I thought.
While wasting a good fifteen minutes on the pushy woman, I had lost my target. Heather was nowhere to be seen. Shit! The last time I saw her she was over by the stage, cleaning up a table and stacking chairs. My pulse increased as I scanned the room. What if Raul got out the door with her?
I heard commotion across the room and cringed. That voice . I’d know it anywhere. To this day I still heard it in my dreams. I turned slightly, preparing myself for what I was about to see.
Rage loomed deep within me and it took an immeasurable amount of restraint to hold back. Raul had Heather by the arm and was whispering something to her. She leaned back, trying to put as much distance between them as possible. I watched as he struck her across the face and without thinking, I drew my weapon. I had it aimed right at his head. One pull of the trigger and he’d drop. Done. Pretty boy bartender was too busy flirting with some bimbo, not paying any attention to Heather and the scene that was unfolding right under his nose. I kept watching, struggling about what to do. Sure I could shoot him, and I’d have no qualms about it whatsoever. But I knew his bodyguards were close and all hell would break loose, putting innocent bystanders in harm’s way. Rule number two: Never go in unless your head is clear . Common good of the people and all that shit came rushing back as I slowly lowered my weapon. I had to let this play out, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t killing me.
Raul hit her once and Heather crumpled to the floor. I wanted so badly to go to her, but I couldn’t. My knuckles were turning white under the strain of my fists; my arms aching to hold her and tell her it was okay. That I was here to save her. But who was I kidding? I’m no knight in shining armor. I bit my lip and held my breath, anxious to see what would happen next. Raul turned and threw money on the ground in her direction. I was silently begging her not to take the bait, and she didn’t. Good girl. If you ever took money from Raul, he owned you.
Another waitress came over and helped Heather to her feet, yelling at pretty boy to get his ass in gear and take her to the back room. He picked her up and I was jealous that she was in his arms and not mine. What the hell am I thinking! This is just business. I’m not here to rekindle our love and all that shit. I’ve got no room for that in my life. I laughed. Yeah,
