What about a shotgun? Are you going to get one to hold you over until the waiting period is up for you to pick up the pistol?" "They only have one, it's a semi-automatic Benelli 12 gauge. It's $2,100. I was expecting to get something for around $600 or less." Jack explained. "If you had been watching what is happening in Detroit right now, you'd give the guy $5,000 and tell him to keep the change. I can spot you a box of 12 gauge shells if you get it. I’m sure they’re out of those too. Whatever you think your life is worth, that’s your cap on how much you should spend." Matt said with conviction. Jack said "OK, I'll get shotgun. I'll come by when I get back." "Call to give me a heads up, so I'll know it's you. Keep your head down when you get by Winn Dixie, they are going nuts over there right now. There was an officer injured while looters were breaking into the store. They won't be playing nice over there." Matt answered. "And tell Tina to come over here and wait for you if she gets scared. There is a lot of gunfire around." "Thanks buddy" Jack said as he hung up to complete his purchase.
CHAPTER 11
"To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them." -George Mason - Father of the Bill of Rights
Sonny called Senator Randall the evening the riots started. "Dina Fitch is calling an emergency session in the Senate tomorrow to approve emergency powers to handle the riots. They are meeting tomorrow to vote on suspending firearms sales until the crisis dies down. They are also going to vote on allowing the Army to provide logistical support to the National Guard in areas where martial law has been invoked." Paul Randall replied "That is par for the course. Their motto is 'never let a crisis go to waste.' Every time something goes wrong, they manage to take a hole puncher to the Constitution. The problem is, there is barely an area of the Constitution or the Bill of Rights big enough for them to get a grip. This is one of the times people need to be able to defend themselves the most, and they want to suspend gun sales. I’ll book a flight out to DC tonight. I will call you tomorrow during lunch and let you know how long the vote is going to run. It will probably go late into tomorrow night, so you can just take care of things here rather than fly out." "Thanks" Sonny replied. "I have no shortage of things to do here. Howe is down 5 points since this morning. Even though he has little to do with this mess, the Howe Clancy connection to the EBT card processing fees is reflecting in people's opinions of him. It is his constituents that are feeling this. None of those folks were going to vote for you anyway." "I just got off the phone with Commanding General Allen Jefferson. The National Guard is just outside of Detroit. They have canceled plans to go inside and try to restore order. They have determined it is an unlikely objective and are now coordinating an effort to quarantine the city. FEMA will be there tomorrow to start taking refugees to camps. They will start with women and children and families. Basically, males over eighteen who don't have ID to show they live with a wife or family won't be allowed to leave the city until more FEMA camps are set up. The first one is going to be in Lansing and from what General Jefferson described, they are almost like minimum security detention centers. I would hate to have to pick between that FEMA camp and Detroit." Paul said. Sonny was starting to grasp the magnitude of the ordeal. "I will pray for those folks tonight. Most of them didn't ask for this." "Pray for folks all over Sonny." Paul added. "We are even hearing of Walmarts that are getting looted in cities all over Texas. Dallas has reported three stores that have been ransacked and one burned to the ground. The people who are doing this are cutting off their own feet. They are destroying their own communities." Sonny replied
