here.â
âBeauâs fine,â Haven repeated. This time she didnât believe it. âHeâll call one of us soon.â
Mae sighed. âIf he calls you, would you tell him to phone his father?â
âOf course,â Haven promised.
âWell then, you go back to sleep, honey,â Mae said. âIâm sorry I had to wake you.â
There was no way Haven was going back to sleep. After the call, she sat with the phone still gripped in her hand.
âWhat is it?â Iain asked. âWhatâs wrong? Was that your mom?â
âBeauâs missing.â The light radiating from the phoneâs display switched off, and Haven stared into the darkness. She had tried to sound upbeat on the call, but now her fears were threatening to swallow her. âHe left for New York last night, and no oneâs heard from him since. Beauâs dad has been trying to find Roy Bradford, but the guy doesnât seem to exist.â
Iainâs warm hand gripped her shoulder. âIs there a chance Beau might have sent you a note?â
Haven felt a rush of hope. Sheâd been traveling all day, and she hadnât had a chance to check her messages. âMaybe,â she said, typing in the password to her e-mail account. âYes!â she shouted at the sight of an unopened envelope next to Beauâs name. She clicked the icon and the note opened.
PAN-PAN, PAN-PAN, was the only thing heâd written. The phone slipped out of Havenâs fingers as soon as she saw the words. Seized by terror, her mind was no longer in control of her body.
âHaven, are you okay?â Iain picked up the device and read the note for himself. âWhatâs âpan-panâ?â
âItâs something Beau and I used to say when we were kids,â Haven said as soon as she was able to speak. âIt means heâs in trouble. Beau sent that note a few hours after his plane landed. Something must have happened when he got to New York, but he hasnât called anyone for help. Which probably means he canât . Either heâs hurt or being held against his will. Dammit! I should have known Roy Bradford was too good to be true! Just because he knew Beau in another life doesnât mean they were meant to be together. What if Naddo was some kind of psychopath? What if Piero broke his heart, and Naddoâs been waiting seven hundred years to get his revenge? What if . . .â
There were too many terrible possibilities to contemplate. When Beau had told her about his trip, Haven had hoped for the best. But she should have prepared for the worst. She knew better than anyone that reincarnation was responsible for creating as many vendettas as soul mates.
âWell, that settles it,â Iain announced. Haven felt him climbing out of bed.
âWhat?â Her sight blurred by tears, she followed the sound of Iainâs voice across the room. âSettles what?â
âIâm going to book a flight to New York right now. Iâll scrape together enough money when I get there to hire a detective to hunt down Roy Bradford. Thereâs someone I used to know. . . .â
âWe donât need a detective, Iain. We need the police . Iâve got to call Beauâs dad and have him contact the NYPD.â
She heard the flip of a switch, and a lamp lit up the room. When Haven wiped her tears, she could see the worry on Iainâs face. âThey might not start looking right away, Haven. Beauâs an adult, and heâs been missing for less than a day.â
âBut they canât wait! What if Beauâs already been hurt?!â Her fists clenched at the thought. If only she could travel back in time, sheâd kill Naddo with her own hands before he had a chance to harm Beau. She could feel her fingers around a throat, but she still couldnât visualize a face. âHold on! What do you remember about Naddo? Was there anything unusual about
