to encounter problems. The natural ebb and flow of life causes great anxiety, and this in turn manifests as skin problems. Interestingly, the emotions and tendencies as- sociated with skin problems, such as inflexibility in life, are also involved in many joint problems. People who tend toward one of these ailments often have the other as well. So let’s look at our prescription for health that includes first identifying the messages your body is sending you and then using affirmations to promote healthy thought patterns that will lead to clear and glowing skin. A good general affirmation for skin prob- lems that stem from the fear and anxiety surrounding change is “I lovingly protect myself with thoughts of joy and peace. The past is forgiven and forgotten. I am free in this moment.” Skin disorders can take many forms; thus the affirmations that will help you address them vary from one condition to the next. If you have acne, for example, the negative thought patterns are associated with not accepting yourself, so the affirmation is “I love and accept myself where I am right now.” Eczema has to do with antagonism and bottled-up emotions coming out. To counteract the effects of these emotions, the healing affirmation is “Harmony and peace, love and joy surround me and indwell me. I am safe and secure.” Hives are about small, hidden fears and the tendency to turn small problems into big ones. The healing affirmation for hives is “I bring peace to every corner of my life.” Rashes in general have to do with irritation because things have not turned out exactly as planned, and the affirmation for these is directed toward patience: “I love and approve of myself. I am at 50 All Is Well interior.indd 50 1/8/13 7:51 AM We Are Family peace with the process of life.” If you have psoriasis, you fear being hurt and may refuse to take responsibility for your own feelings. In this case, the affirmation would be “I am alive to the joys of living. I deserve and accept the very best in life. I love and approve of myself.” Try some of the affirmations set out here or refer to the table on page 183 to find an affirmation for your specific ailment. To address some of the other emotional issues that create skin problems, it is necessary to work on your ability to handle change. As they say, change is the only constant in life. So what can you do? Probably the easiest way to work on this is by shaking up your routine, routine, routine. Though it’s seemingly counterintuitive, plan some spontaneity into your life. Every once in a while, set aside a time to just let life take you where it wants. For example, you could leave an hour in your calendar and simply start walk- ing. See what you come in contact with. You’ll be introducing a little variety, which can help you see that a world without back- to-back plans isn’t necessarily terrible. You could also take a bold action by stepping into a particular role because chaos comes with the territory. Put yourself in a situation where it’s not possible to control everything—volunteer at a shelter or in a kindergarten classroom. Who knows what could happen there? You might also want to sit down with your schedule to deter- mine whether there are certain areas of your life where you can focus on letting go of a tiny bit of control. You may not want to give up the power in the boardroom, but perhaps your child’s play- time could be freer. The goal with all of these suggestions is to develop flexibility. If you are more flexible, you’ll be better able to handle change. The confidence this will inspire in your ability to work with the world—rather than against it—will decrease the amount of anxiety you feel on a day-to-day basis.
