Alaska Black Gold Box Set
You can walk anywhere, go barefoot, and you don’t have to wear slippers if you don’t want to,” Carrie says following me as I take a tour of the place.
The kitchen is the first place I stop. It’s to the left and is larger than our old apartment. I rush to the double door stainless steel refrigerator, and I open it, and to my surprise it is filled with everything including a large supply of my favorite yogurt, juice and sandwich meats.
I turn to Carrie. “We don’t have finances for this kind of food and luxuries. We can’t just take this from Jackson. There’s always a price. What does Jackson want in return?”
“Why can’t a man who has money give his lover this?” And she opens her arms points around as if she is a model showing off the latest cars.
“Because there is a name for women who take gifts from a man. Especially gifts of this magnitude.”
“Well there is a name for a woman who give it away for free without getting anything from a man. She’s called a fool.” I knew Carried was being harsh but so was I with my nasty comment. I didn’t want to hurt her feeling when she thought she was doing the best she could to keep a roof over our heads.
Neither one of us had a dime when she met Jackson and I know Carrie slept with him not for his money but because she liked him. Her problem was that she fell in love too easy and she would have liked him if he was broke. Thank god he had money, otherwise, we both would have been sleeping on a park bench or worse yet in an abandon building in a crime ridden area in a seedy part of Seattle.
“I’m sorry Carrie. I should be thankful for a friend like you. I know you were thinking about me.” She shoots me a wide eyed innocent Carrie smile and I can’t help but hug her.
“Now let’s see your room.” When she opens the door, my mouth falls open. The bed is huge. A California king with the most luxurious bedding. I throw myself on it.
“Look at these sheets.” I pass my hand over them. They’re like a babies skin; soft and smooth. “They’re Egyptian cotton and they have to cost at least five hundred dollars,” I say glancing up at her.
“They’re double that amount.” She stops talking about sheets. “I put your pregnancy kit over there.” She points to the dresser. My eyes wander to her and to the dresser then back to her. Do I want to find out whether I’m pregnant now? I scold myself for not taking birth control pills.
I thought that was a way to prevent me from going too far with a man, I didn’t want to get married. I hadn’t counted on this happening in my future. I want to be a teacher. Who knew that when I traveled to Alaska to cook and clean that this would happen to me?
“I hear the bell,” Carrie says turning away in the direction of the door. “I’ll be right back because I want to know.” I angle my head because I don’t understand. “Are you or aren’t you?” She places her hands on her stomach. This was a joke to Carrie but it was serious and very real to me. I walk to the dresser, stand and glanced down, but still I can’t bring myself to pick up the box. So who is sticking their head in the sand this time? I scold myself.
The door opens and I reach for the box. “Carrie, I’m going to get this over with,” I say unaware of who’s in the room.
“I’m not Carrie.” The voice is sexy, indulgent, and relaxed. “Please take the test. I want to know if I’m going to be a father.” I jerk around and standing in my room is Chance Gold.
“How did you get here so soon?” My voice is distant and cool.
“Why did you leave me the way you did? You didn’t leave a note. I was worried when I realize that you were gone. Good thing I knew the driver of that van that took you to the airport. Some of my men were slated to go home, and he explained to me when I called around, that he had just dropped a beautiful black woman off at the airport bound for Seattle. That’s when I knew it was my
