car to the apartment where Matt is staying. Colleen answers her phone on the way. Itâs the Giant Eagle Market Districtâthe store where they think Maggie Brown was first accosted by the manâfinally getting back to her.
âIs this the detective who wanted to know about tapes?â
âYes.â
âWe donât keep them long.â
âHow long?â
âWe donât have tapes over a month old.â
âOh.â Not that sheâs surprised. Only disappointed. âIâll come by to see what you have anyway.â
Christie says, âSmall chance it would have caught an altercation in the lot anyway.â
âSmall chance, but a chance,â she says. Then they approach the apartment house on Morrowfield. âAnything new happen last night when you got Matt back here?â
âI put Matt to bed. Oopale was very kind, fed me a little meal. I asked her if sheâd ever seen male visitors to the apartment. She said no. Very, very consistent reports.â
âUnfortunately.â
They take the stairs one floor up.
The mother and daughter both come to the door to show them in. They all move quickly to the kitchen table where Matt sits, dawdling over his food. Christie chooses the seat across from him. âMatt. How are you this morning?â
Matt shrugs.
âWould you show us what you did yesterday? Would you help us?â
âYes.â
âOkay. Letâs get up then. Letâs pretend the living room over here is your apartment. You were where, again?â
âIn my room. I was playing with my PlayStation.â
âOkay, letâs make this chair over here be your bedroom. And then?â Christie asks calmly.
âI heard a knock on the door. I heard my mother answer the door.â
âDid you go to look at all?â
âNo, I kept playing.â He breathes hard. He is not okay with this part. âShe gets deliveries sometimes, stuff like that.â
âOn Sunday morning, no deliveries, people are relaxing, who comes by?â
âSunday.â He looks frightened at his mistake about deliveries. âMaybe Sasha?â
âAnybody else?â
âNo, I canât think of anybody.â
âOkay. And then?â
âI was just playing. Then I heard, like, arguing.â
âThatâs important. What were they saying?â
âStuff like, âGet out,â and âYou canât treat me like that.â â
âGood, good. Did they talk about you?â
âThe guy said, âI want to see him. I want to know him.â I peeked out of my room then because I could tell it was about me. I thought finally she would tell me who my father was and I would meet him.â
âCould you see him?â
âJust from the back a little bit.â
âDid you return to your room?â
âNo, because she yelled.â
âOkay. I know itâs awful to have to repeat things, but tell us again what she said, okay?â
âLike, âMatt. Leave. Just run. Leave. Go to a neighbor.â â
âBut you couldnât see this man?â
âI was running.â
âAnd the little bit you saw ⦠what did he look like?â
âJust regular.â
âAnything you can remember? Hair, how tall?â
âDark hair. Taller than my mom but not real tall.â
âLike me?â Christie asks.
âYeah. I think.â
âAnd he was wearing?â
âBlue jeans, sneakers, just a shirt.â
âWhat kind of shirt?â
âI donât remember.â
âThatâs okay.â
âShe was saying to run, so I ran.â
âBut you grabbed the phone. Stopped a little bit to grab it.â
âI donât think I stopped. I just grabbed it.â
âOkay. And then you used the stairs?â
âYes.â
âWhen did you use the phone?â
âWhen I got to the bottom.â
