out?â
Ryan looked at him like he was stupid. Good.
âObviously not. You were there, right?â
Hank nodded. And waited. Ryan eventually filled the silence.
âI left after she and Kelly went to bed. Momâs pretty old-fashioned, so we were in separate bedrooms. Kelly didnât know Iâd left, either.â
Maybe Mrs. Nelson is a better mother than I gave her credit for, Hank thought.
âWhat stuff?â
âHuh?â
âWhat stuff where you thinking about ⦠up at the high school?â
âOh, right. I donât know. School. Kelly. Itâs all pretty stressful. A lot more stressful than I thought itâd be.â
âHow so?â
He shrugged again. âItâs so much work. And Momâs calling all the time. Always telling me Iâd better be getting her moneyâs worth up there. Having all kinds of experiences and taking all kinds of classes. But then she wants me to come home all the time, too. She can ⦠well, she can be a pain.â
Hank could only imagine.
âWhen was the last time you were homeâbefore this weekend?â Hank asked.
âChristmas break,â he said. âI knew Iâd be coming back this weekend for Granâs birthday. Thatâs not something you miss.â
âAnd this is your second semester at St. Louis University?â
âYeah.â
âAnd is that where you met Kelly?â
âYeah. We had our University 101 orientation together. Sheâs in a sorority.â He grinned.
âHow long have you been seeing her?â
âOh, about a month or two. Since right afterââ He stopped. Heâd figured out they were circling around to Mandy.
âRight after what?â
âRight after Christmas break,â he said slowly.
âAnd when, exactly, did you and Mandy break up?â
Ryan fidgeted in his seat. Hank waited.
âRight around thenâ¦â he said eventually.
Hankâs eyebrow went up. âRight around when, exactly?â
Ryan yanked at the lock of hair that kept falling into his eyes. He looked out the window. He chewed his lip. Then he pushed at the hair again.
âShe ⦠we ⦠itâs complicated.â
Hank almost snorted. If this kid thought life with two living girlfriends was complicated, wait until he had to deal with the reality of one who had been murdered and one who knew sheâd been two-timed. Add to that the fact that he was currently Hankâs top suspect, and Ryan the Boyfriendâs life was not looking simple.
Ryan got a grip on himself. He straightened in his chair and cleared his throat. âWe broke up two weeks ago. It was a mutual decision.â
âThen can you explain to me why she was five hours away from her university, without her parents knowing, and in the same place where your family was having a large celebration?â
âNo,â Ryan said flatly. âI canât.â
Hank leaned forward and put his arms on the desk in front of him.
âDid you know she was on the boat?â
âNo.â
âDid you know she was in Branson at all?â
âNo.â
âWhen was the last time you saw her?â
âChristmas break.â
âWhen was the last time you talked to her?â
âTwo weeks ago.â
âWas that when you broke up?â
âYes.â
âWho broke up with whom?â
â Whom ? Really?â He paused and gritted his teeth. âI said it was mutual.â
âBut you didnât tell your mother.â
âYes, I did.â
âNot when it happened.â
âWell, I guess not. I was ⦠I was getting over it.â
âWith Kelly?â
Ryan shoved his hair out of his face again.
âWhy didnât you tell your mother?â
âI didnât want to, okay? Youâve met her. I didnât want a lecture.â
âAnd she would have lectured you?â
âNo. But she
