pleading for me not to tell her secret.
I clear my throat. âIf heâs ballinâ, I sure canât tell. He must be giving all of the shopping money to his precious little baby.â
âUmm ... my mom bought them for me,â Candy says with a nervous giggle.
âWell, Gia, you need to pick up some fashion tips from your little sister,â Valerie says. âSheâs looking flawless right now, from head to toe.â
Candy smiles adoringly at Valerie. âThank you, Val! Iâm glad you like my outfit.â
âDonât get too thankful, boo. Itâs not a good look. We are Hi-Steppers and weâre supposed to be fierce,â Valerie says.
I stand up and grab my gym bag. âIâve got to go. Mother Cranford is waiting. And Candy, you need to get to the house. Itâs spaghetti night.â
Candy scrunches her nose. âIs that all your mother cooks?â
âJust be glad it isnât tuna surprise night.â

G wen is sitting at the kitchen table doing a crossword puzzle in the newspaper. This is great, because it means sheâs in chill mode. I need her to be completely relaxed because Iâm about to ask her about going to Cedar Point.
âMom, I need to ask you something,â I say.
Gwen places her pencil on the table and pats one of the chairs. âCome on in here and sit down,â she says.
I sit at the table and take a sip out of Gwenâs glass. She snatches her glass of juice away from me and sips it herself. For a second, it feels like old times when it was just me and Gwen. No husband, no pilfering stepsister. Just the two of us.
âWhat do you want to ask me?â
âWill you please listen to the entire request before you say anything?â I ask.
Gwen shakes her head. âUnh-uh! Nope. Whenever you say something like that, youâre about to ask me something ridiculous.â
âMom! Just hear me out.â
âGo ahead, Gia. But this better not be crazy.â
âWell, most of the junior class is going to Cedar Point over Labor Day weekend.â
Gwen twists her lips to the side and squints. âAnd? What else?â she asks.
âIâd like to go. Ricky said he would drive if we gave him gas money.â
âOkay, you can go,â Gwen says.
âThanks, Mom, but thatâs not all.â
âThereâs more?â
âWell, yes. If we stay until the park closes, it will be too late for us to drive an hour and a half coming back home.â
Gwen crosses her arms like she knows whatâs coming. I continue. âSo Brother Bryan, the youth choir director, has agreed to chaperone us if we get a few hotel rooms and stay the night. Weâd be back for Sunday morning worship service.â
âIs that this coming weekend?â asks Gwen.
âNo, itâs next weekend.â
âWell, you-all sure have this all planned out, donât you?â
âPlease, Mom! Please, can I go?â I beg.
âCan you go where?â Elder LeRon asks. Heâs walked into the house and right up into a conversation where he was not invited.
âHi, honey!â says Gwen. âSome of the young people from the church are going to Cedar Point on Labor Day weekend.â
Elder LeRon frowns. âWhat young people?â
âBrother Bryan is taking a few car groups,â I reply. I do not appreciate this interrogation. Not one bit.
âIs Candy going?â he asks.
âUmm, no!â
Gwen asks, âWhy canât Candy go?â
âYes, why isnât your stepsister invited?â
I canât stop the groan that escapes my mouth. First of all, why is LeRon even a part of this conversation? Iâm not asking him for his permission, Iâm asking my mother for her permission.
âSheâs not invited because sheâs a freshman, and no freshmen are invited. This is an upperclassmen event,â I explain.
âThatâs silly,â Gwen says.
