Pretty much everyone he expected to be there was, in fact, in the room sitting at the table. Cuban cigar smoke filled the air. The smell of Scotch tickled his nose. He was in need of another drink and a Cuban himself. Once his crew realized he was in the room, the chatter began to die down. He had called an emergency meeting and all of the members were all too curious to know the nature of the unexpected gathering.
He made his way over to the bar. He dropped two ice cubes in a glass and filled it halfway with Scotch. He then clipped the end of a Cuban and lit it. He took a swig of the liquor on the rocks as he walked over and positioned himself at the head of the table. He couldn’t help but watch the people he considered family in the room. The room was filled with men who had laid their lives on the line and would do it again and again in the blink of an eye for him and his family.
He knew calling the emergency meeting would have all of them on high alert and that’s exactly what he wanted. He knew how much they all loved and respected his father. He wanted them all to be motivated and charged up about finding the couple responsible for the loss of their deceased boss, and bring them to him. He wanted his men to put the full-court press on the streets until they brought the killers out of hiding or until they slipped up. Most importantly, he wanted them all to know he would be running the organization with the same iron fist as his father.
He put his thoughts on hold when he saw who he had been expecting. Everybody’s attention was drawn to the new arrival who had just entered the room. Sammy Black Jr. just smiled.
â€œSorry I’m late,” Joshua Black announced. He peered over at his cousin. He returned Sammy Jr.’s smile. He then replaced it with a more solemn, apologetic one for being tardy. Sammy Jr. acknowledged him with a nod. Aside from him being his boss, he was his favorite cousin. Although the two were first cousins, they were more like brothers. Sammy Jr.’s father was also Joshua’s favorite uncle and like a father to him as well. Which was why when he got the call from Sammy Black Jr. about the death of his father and requested that he come back to the East Coast, Joshua Black dropped everything and headed to LAX Airport.
Joshua found a corner and wasted no time posting up in it. He nodded in Big Lou’s direction. Everybody made it their business to show Joshua Black some form of respect. His name rang bells from Ireland to America in their world. He may have been only five foot one, 143 pounds, but his reputation was that of a colossus. Every man in the room knew at least one legendary tale about Joshua Black. The one known to all was how he single-handedly wiped out an entire crew who had been trying to muscle their way in on their family’s business when Sammy Black Sr. was still alive. It was reported that over a dozen dead bodies were discovered in the Richmond mansion. The allegation was the reason why Joshua Black was sent to California, until the heat died down. That was nearly ten years ago.
â€œGlad everybody could make it,” Sammy Jr. announced. He threw the remainder of his drink back then made himself another. That instantly drew the attention of his crew. It wasn’t too often that they saw their leader toss drinks back like that. They all knew the only time he actually drank excessively was when they were either celebrating or he was about to put some work in. Everybody sat attentively waiting for Sammy Jr. to fill them in on why they were all there.
He chose his words wisely before he spoke. “We have a serious situation,” he informed the room. Everybody in the room began to nod. They were well aware of the situation. They all waited, eager to know what their new leader would say next.
â€œWe need to nip this in the bud immediately!” Sammy Jr. boomed. Judging by the looks on their faces, he knew what was going on in
