with no parents to tell him what he could and couldnât do.
Over pauses in the music, she heard the persistent ring of the phone and a muffled conversation. Seconds later, her door opened and her mother stood there mouthing something.
âWhat?â
Caroline leaned over the bed and plucked out Jessâs earplugs. âCome to the kitchen and have a talk with us for a minute.â
In the kitchen, her parents sat at the table looking grave. âCome and sit down, honey,â said Caroline. âJudy Arnold just rang.â
Jess felt her breathing slow. âWhat for?â Grace and Rosieâs crazy mum never rang this house. âWhatâs wrong?â
Craig exhaled thoughtfully and looked at his wife, as if to clarify that they were in consensus.
âWhat?â Jess became increasingly worried. âIs it Rosie or Grace? What? Whatâs happened?â
âSheâs going out to Blakely Downs with the girls to join Lawson and Ryan,â said Craig.
Jessâs jaw dropped. âGrace and Rosie too? Youâre kidding me!â She groaned, then quickly geared up for a rant. â Everyone gets to go but me! My filly is thrown out in the middle of nowhere with no one to look after her, and everyone is just going off chasing cows!â
âWell, theyâve invited you to go too,â said Caroline.
Jess swallowed her rant, unsure if sheâd heard right.
Her mother nodded.
Jess folded her arms. âAnd let me guess â Iâm not allowed to go. I have to go and do karmic yoga sessions under the full moon for six months until I can nurture my anger with love!â
âItâs only for ten days over the holidays. Iâm sure we can postpone the yoga until you get back,â Caroline said dryly.
âYouâre letting me go?â
âWell, as we said earlier,â said Craig, âif there wasnât just a bunch of men out there, weâd be more likely to consider it. With a responsible woman to chaperone you, then maybe . . .â
âYouâll be away for your birthday,â said Caroline.
âIâm going? â
Caroline smiled and nodded.
Jess screamed and threw her arms around her mother. Then she leapt from the chair and did a dance around the kitchen. âIâm going to Blakely Downs! I can find Opal and bring her back.â She paused and looked at her mum. âHow will I get Dodger out there?â
âHeâs not going.â
âWhy not? Who will I ride?â
âYouâre not riding.â
âNot riding?â
âYouâll be cooking and helping Mrs Arnold to pack up and move camp,â said Craig.
Jess gave a sardonic laugh. âOf course.â
âThat is the only way weâll allow you to go, Jessica,â said her father. âYou will be under her strict supervision.â
âThis trip is not about Opal,â said Caroline. âYouâll be on the road with the cattle. Sheâll be turned out on the station somewhere. I doubt youâll even see her.â
Jess let her motherâs words float in one ear, waft around and then sail out the other. She would find a way to bring Opal home. âGrace was so right,â she said, changing the subject. âBoys get to do all the fun stuff.â
âYouâre not going out there for a holiday, Jess. Droving is hard work and long hours. Lawson is expecting you to work. His horses will be working hard too, moving cattle all day, so I doubt youâll be riding much,â her father repeated. âEven if you stay in one spot for a few days, thereâll still be meals to cook and jobs to do.â
âI know, I know, Iâll work really hard,â said Jess, her mind already plotting.
âOh, and thereâs one more thing,â said Caroline.
âWhat?â Jess broke from her scheming. âIs there a catch?â
âShara is going too.â
â Yesss! â Jess couldnât
