rude to your friend, Catherine Angsley, in this very bar, in front of far more people, that she left the county, never to be seen again.â
Carter shrugged. âAt least I knew her first.â
Mae chuckled. âAnd you, young man,â she said to Clint. âYou sent that beautiful Texan, what was her name? Salela Bennett, running all the way back to Texas!â
âSasha,â Clint corrected.
âSasha, thatâs right. Sasha . Why canât I ever remember that name?â Mae asked. âOh! Maybe itâs because no one could possibly keep track of the women who come and go through your ever so charming lives!â
âMae! Weâre just looking for true love,â Clint said dryly.
âMy foot! Youâre looking for the next great body. But I think that the two of you could be left in the dust by this new visitor,â Mae informed them with a sagely spoken pleasure.
âWell, of course, because with Mattâs brand of charm, sheâll be heading straight back to Washington,â Carter said with a sigh. He arched a brow to Matt. âI can recall a few times when you might have been a little rough on Lavinia.â
âAt least he married her first,â Mae said.
âI was never that rude to Laviniaâeven in the midst of divorce,â Matt said, irritated with himself that he was still feeling defensive, and now being reminded of his disastrous marriage.
âSee, Mae? You canât rush into marriage,â Carter said. âLook at the whole Lavinia thing. There she wasâthe most gorgeous thing breathing on earth, and what a manipulative witch.â
âWe just didnât have the same concept of a life well lived,â Matt said, wondering why in the hell he should suddenly defendeven his ex-wife. Simple fact, Lavinia had been a bitch. Rich, spoiled, and heedless of anyone around her.
âWeâre all missing the point here,â old Anthony Larkin suddenly pointed out. âMae, seems to me the world has changed a lot since I was a young man. Hell, yes, these young people should find out if theyâre going to make it in an affair before tying the knot. Divorces are too easy these days, and theyâre still hard as hell on people. Especially on their kids!â
âWell, thankfully, Matt and Lavinia didnât have kids. A devilâs tail might have shown up on one of them,â Clint said. âI think Laviniaâs had plastic surgery to get rid of hers, but genetically, it would have still been there.â
âLavinia is gone, and itâs over,â Matt said flatly.
âThat Sibel, Shana, or Sheila girl Clint was dating wasnât a bitch,â Mae said with a sniff. âOpinionated, and intelligent, and ready to take care of herself. But she wasnât a bitch.â
Clint offered an exaggerated sigh. âMae, her name was Sasha. Sasha Bennett. And the problem with our great affair was that she wanted me to move to Texas! And wait a minuteâweâre getting off the subject here.â
Anthony shook his white head in a way that made his beard rake back and forth over his chest. âAll right, hereâs my opinion from an old geezer, Matt. Letâs forget about past transgressionsâcommitted by the lot of you. Every woman isnât a potential affair. This one seems darned regal and intelligent. She was sent here to work. Matt, youâre having trouble up at your place. You told me yourself, you called your grandfatherâs old friend Harrison after you received his letter. Key concept hereâ you called him . Soâjust why were you such a jerk to that girl?â
âShe looks too much like Lavinia,â Clint said.
âNo, she doesnât,â Carter argued. âShe has the walk, the movementâ¦kind of like a natural grace. Thatâs all thatâs the same.â
Matt scowled at them both. âHey, looks have nothing to do with anything,
