realized he was late for the sailing.â
âNo.â
âWhy do you say that?â
âHis behavior.â
âItâs still just a hunch.â
He didnât admit that she was nearly right.
She smiled. âSo you believe in gut feelings and not much else.â
He shook his head, almost smiling, but he wasnât willing to discuss it. âMy partner on this case wants to meet you, by the way. Weâll get to that later. Meanwhile, Iâd appreciate going to the employee cafeteria with you.â
âFollow me,â she said. As they left her cabin and walked down the narrow hallway, she added, âYouâre aware that there are quite a few entertainers on the ship, arenât you?â
âOf course.â
âAnyone in particular you want to meet?â
Jude had memorized the names. âSimon Green, Ralph Martini and Larry Hepburn. And your head of entertainment, Bradley Wilcox.â
âOh!â she said.
âYou know them?â he asked her. âWell?â
âBradley Wilcox was the head on my first contract with Celtic American, too,â she said. âHeâs talented at his job.â
âAnd?â
She shrugged. âTo my mind? A jerk. Rude. He seems to think weâre all lesser individuals. His servants. But as I said, I have to admit heâs good at his job.â
âWhat about the others?â
âThis is the first time Iâve been on the same shipâsame contractâwith Simon Green and Larry Hepburn. Ralph Martini, I do know. Iâve worked with him before. Heâs a nice guy and, again, very talented.â She glanced at Jude sideways and he was surprised to realize once more how attractive she was, with her head of sunset-tinged hair and amber eyes.
Just the type the Archangel might choose...
âBe careful around these people,â he said, his voice gruff.
âTheyâre really suspects? Is there a reason for that?â she asked.
âProximity,â he replied. âThey mightâve been in all the locations where murders took place. And you really shouldnât know what weâre thinking, and I shouldnât be speaking to you about this at all. At the moment, though, youâre about all Iâve got.â
âSo, Iâm all youâve got. Great,â she murmured.
But he could tell that she did intend to be helpful.
âGrab a tray,â she told him, leading him to the buffet. âI see Simon and Ralphâtheyâre over there.â
He selected a bagel and a plate of eggs from the buffet and followed her to the table.
Ralph and Simon greeted her with friendly smiles and she introduced them to Jude. âCompany bigwig,â she said lightly. âWatching us on board.â
Ralph stood up to shake Judeâs hand. He was a stocky middle-aged man of about six feet. âHeâs a great tenor!â Alexi said in a cheerful voice.
âAnd Iâm chorus.â Simon got up to shake Judeâs hand, as well.
âWe all start somewhere,â Ralph said.
Simon Green was a handsome man, young, classically good-looking. He was lean, and Jude figured he must be a decent dancer if he was in the chorus of a play like Les Miz .
Ralph grinned. âShould we be afraid of you?â he asked. He obviously wasnât.
âNo.â Jude grinned back. âWeâre just observing, trying to see what works and where improvements might be made,â he lied. âI understand that the entertainment on this ship is excellent.â
âThatâs a relief,â Ralph said. âHey, thereâs Clara.â He waved and Jude turned. A very pretty blonde had come into the room. She looked over at them and waved, frowning curiously as she saw Jude.
âJust getting some food!â she called.
âClara Avery,â Alexi told Jude. âShe has a gorgeous soprano voice.â
âPart of our Les Miz cast,â Simon added.
