go about it.
âBloodâs old helmet is rubbish,â Keskorian gripes. âI would have preferred a decent sword.â
âWell, you should have really gone for it just now then,â Nurax says.
âYeah, yeah. Great, go ahead and enjoy your harness. But Iâm telling you, itâs rubbish too. How many defence points does it have? Fourteen? You may as well just fold yourself a paper one.â
âAs if.â Nurax splutters. âFourteen are definitely going to repel orc arrows â which nearly cost me all my life energy yesterday!â
Sarius is keeping out of the discussion. Heâs realised that his doublet might be a problem. Only five points of defence. Hopefully there arenât any orcs nearby.
âTake a look at Bloodâs harness! How many points of strength does it have?â
BloodWork takes his time to answer.
âFifty-two.â
âI donât want to know what he had to do for that,â Sapujapu says.
âAnd itâs none of your bloody business,â declares the giant barbarian.
âCareful! The messenger already cautioned someone about swearing. A dwarf. I was there.â
As Nurax speaks, a new figure arrives at the fire â a dark she-elf, with a longbow hanging over her shoulder. The black, tightly woven plait reminds Sarius of Emily. He calls up her name: Arwenâs Child.
âHi, AC.â Nurax greets her. âWow, youâre a Three now! Congratulations!â
âThanks. It wasnât a big deal. No battle today?â
âWeâre just finished,â Keskorian informs her. âFour trolls â it was no joke. Do you know everyone here? You know BloodWork at any rate, donât you?â
âYes, we searched for a stone changeling together. Hi, Blood.â
The barbarian doesnât answer, just sits unmoving, staring into the fire.
âBut I donât know LaCor â or Sapujapu or Samira or Sarius either. Are names starting with Sa in right now?â
âBetter than being nicked from Lord of the Rings ,â Sarius responds and earns applause from Samira.
Arwenâs Child takes a few steps towards Sarius. âYouâre a One,â she states.
âYes.â
âAny more Ones here?â
âIâve already seen four of them today,â Lelant says. Sarius has almost forgotten about the quiet dark elf. Possibly due to the fact that Lelant has taken âdarkâ very literally. His clothing is all black, like his hair. His face is the colour of coffee with hardly any milk. Nick canât help wondering whether Colin might not be concealed behind the figure.
âThere are more and more Ones. Including Sarius there have been two dark elves, a werewolf and a human today.â
âHumans are totally rare,â Sapujapu observes.
âAnd unnecessary,â BloodWork adds.
Sarius would like to ask a few questions during the ensuing lull in the conversation. Like whether the spinning oval stone above them is a wish crystal. And what he should do in order to survive the next battle with his poor equipment. Or how he can get to the next level quickly. Because by the look of it, heâs nothing as a One. âHave you got any good tips you can give me?â he asks around. âYes. Try to stay alive,â Nurax says. âItâs best to stay close to a very strong character while youâre still so weak yourself.â
âBut keep away from me,â BloodWork says. âBloody elves.â
âHow come youâre giving the newbie tips anyway?â Keskorian grumbles. âWeâre opponents, remember? Do you want to get the final reward yourself, or have him get it? For all I care all the new-bies can snuff it. Thereâs too many of us already anyway.â
âThatâs right,â says BloodWork.
âToo many for what?â Sarius enquires.
Nurax stays silent, seeing heâs been reprimanded so sharply. But Sapujapu
