soldiers.â
Daniel shrugged.
âHe got shot at,â Zane said. âLots of different times. Then an RPG hit his Humvee.â
Daniel sat up straight. âA what?â
âA rocket-propelled grenade,â Zane explained and then shoved his last bite of noodles into his mouth.
âOh,â Daniel responded and then asked, âDoes he have one of those uniforms?â
âSure,â Zane said. âLots of them.â
Daniel frowned. Zane picked up his plate and headed toward the sink.
âThank you,â Zane said.
â âWilcom ,â Eve answered.
âPardon?â
She smiled. âItâs Pennsylvania Dutch for âyouâre welcome.ââ
âSo thatâs what itâs called. Itâs what Daniel and you were speaking this morning.â Zane pointed toward Rose. âAnd what she speaks, right?â
âAll of us speak it, but, jah, Rose more than the rest of us. She hasnât had as much experience with English.â
âWill you teach me?â Zane asked.
Daniel harrumphed behind her. âThatâll be the day.â Eve frowned at him again.
âZane could learn,â Lila said.
âNah,â Daniel said. âHe doesnât have any reason to learn it.â
âI like languages,â Zane said. â Je parle français . Yo hablo español. Ich spreche Deutsch .â
Rose laughed. â Jah! Wie alt sind ?â
âZwölf,â Zane replied.
Rose laughed again. âIch bin sieben.â
Zane high-fived her, which made her laugh even more. âI donât really speak German, although I am twelve,â Zane said. âAnd Iâm pleased to know youâre seven.â He smiled at her. âI donât speak French either. But I do speak a little Spanish, and Iâm going to take it in my new school.â
âWe study German in our school,â Lila said.
Rose grinned. âIâm getting pretty good at it.â
Eve shook her head at the little girl, warning her not to be prideful.
âAnd you study Pennsylvania Dutch too?â Zane asked.
Lila answered, âNo, we just learn it. When weâre little. Itâs not a written language so we canât study it.â
Zaneâs expression soured. âOh.â
âJah, thatâs why you canât learn it.â Daniel headed toward the door.
Lilaâs voice was low, but Eve still heard her clearlyââIâll teach you.â
Zane smiled and then followed Daniel out the door.
Eve called after her nephew. âCheck on the cow that is due on your way back.â
âI know!â Daniel responded. âYou donât have to tell me.â
âDenki!â Zane yelled as he ran out the door.

T he next morning Zane and Charlie headed out to the neighborsâ as Shani left for the hospital. Charlie appeared rested, especially for having slept in his truck. She trusted him completely, but she also appreciated his sense of propriety.
Before visiting Joel, she checked in with Tim, who looked like he hadnât slept at all. However, Simon seemed to be doing better. She introduced herself, and through the wires he murmured, âHallo.â
Tim followed her out to the hall. âHow long are you staying today?â
âA few hours.â
âI need a ride back to the farm.â
She contemplated his words, wondering why heâd be leaving. âWill Simon be all right without you?â
âHis grandparents are coming.â Timâs focus shifted down the hall. âMy wifeâs Mamm and Dat.â
âOh,â Shani said. He didnât seemed very pleased about their visit. âOf course Iâll give you a ride.â
Joel dozed most of the morning, and when she got ready to leave, she told him sheâd back in the late afternoon or early evening. He squeezed her hand, but that was all.
Tim hardly spoke on the way home. As she drove up the
